The Area
Super Stokey
During the early 19th Century, the Manor of Stoke Newington was finally incorporated as part of London, although, even today it has managed to maintain its independant, 'villagey' feel.
Amongst the many elegant Grade I and II listed buildings, the High Victorian fantasy of Abney Park Cemetry is one of Stoke Newington's hidden treasures. In fact, for such a small area crushed between fashionable Islington in the south-west, Haringay in the North and Hackney in the East, Stokey has a generous amount of open space including Newington Common and the West Reservoir.
Clissold Park is popular with both old and young alike, incorporating tennis courts, fish ponds, water fowl and a small menagerie of animals.
Whilst Stoke Newington also offers a wide range of pubs, late night bars, restaurants and boutique shops, the area remains perfect for families and young children. Stokey has numerous primary and secondary schools whose league table results are amongst the best in the capital.
Stokey has always had a reputation for culture, creativity and political outspokeness and nowadays, many well-known musicians and actors have chosen to make the area their home continuing in the tradition of famous former residents like Edgar Allen Poe, the late Private Eye journalist, Paul Foot, glam hero Marc Bolan and actress, Barbara Windsor.
